Plan the Perfect Nursery
Safety First
More important than the most exquisite design is the safety of your newborn’s space:
• Keep nursery room curtains and cords far away from the crib.
• Don’t get sucked into buying all that cute extra bedding. Bumpers, blankets, sheets and stuffed toys shouldn’t be in your baby’s crib because they increase the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Instead, opt for a soft, fitted mattress cover over your baby’s firm mattress and a sleep sack to keep baby snug.
• If you’re painting the room, opt for a low VOC paint.
• Don’t buy a crib with slats further than two and three-eighths inches apart (to prevent your baby’s head from getting stuck).
• Be sure you have carpet or a non-skid rug under the crib and changing table to keep them from shifting or sliding.
Meet our expert:
Robin Thering is the founder of BabyNurseryRooms.com a site she started shortly after her daughter was born where she could combine her love of writing, interior design, and helping others. She herself chose a modern, gender-neutral nursery in earth tones for her first-born, but looks forward to redecorating in the near future!
